Common misunderstandings about outsourced marketing support

Many SMEs assume that bringing in marketing support means one of two things: either outsourcing everything, or paying someone to “do social media”. Neither is usually the real answer!
Most of the businesses that come to us at KopyKat already care about marketing. They’ve invested time, money or energy into it at some point. The issue isn’t effort, it’s direction.
A common misunderstanding is that marketing support is about adding tasks. In reality, the most valuable work often happens before anything new is created. It’s about understanding what’s already there, what’s working, what isn’t, and what no longer makes sense.
Another misconception is that marketing support is only useful once a business reaches a certain size. In practice, earlier clarity can save a huge amount of wasted spend. We regularly see businesses trying to run before they’ve decided where they’re actually going.
There’s also an assumption that support means losing control. That someone external will come in with a fixed way of doing things. Good marketing support should do the opposite. It should help business owners make better decisions, feel more confident about priorities and understand why certain activities matter.
That’s why we don’t start with tactics. We start with conversations. What are you trying to grow? What’s changing in your business? Where does marketing need to support operations, not distract from them?
For some businesses, support looks like monthly outsourced marketing, acting as an extension of their team. For others, it’s a focused project or a strategy session to reset direction. And for some, it’s coaching, helping an internal team member feel more confident and capable.
There’s no single “right” model. The right approach depends on the business, its stage and its appetite for change.
If marketing currently feels heavier than it should, that’s often a sign that the support you need isn’t more activity, but clearer thinking.
